fieldWISE: Driving Farmer Income, Productivity, and Input Efficiency

fieldWISE is an integrated agricultural Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) platform that brings together satellite intelligence, AI/ML models, and real-time weather data to help farmers, governments, and businesses make smarter decisions. Vassar Labs built fieldWISE using deep tech capabilities: remote sensing, cloud computing, IoT, and GenAI, to create a unified data backbone for India’s agricultural ecosystem, connecting existing government systems such as AgriStack and Digital Crop Survey.

At its core, fieldWISE is built around three outcomes for the farmer: more income, higher productivity, and lower input cost, delivered as a single connected system, directly aligned with the Government of India’s own agricultural priorities. The platform has been deployed at state scale, including the integrated Agriculture Information and Management System in Andhra Pradesh (APAIMS) and MahaAgriNEX in Maharashtra.

Boosting Farm Productivity

A verified base enables precision at scale. With crop and extent data confirmed at the plot level, rather than assumed from district averages, fieldWISE ensures that advisories and services reach the right farmer for the right field. All advisories are made accessible through a GenAI assistant, the AI Agronomist, supporting voice and text conversation in native languages.

  • Farm boundary and sowing intelligence: 1 crore farm parcels digitized to over 90% accuracy, with 2.3 crore+ verified land records in Andhra Pradesh giving officers real-time sowing intelligence.
Bund boundaries
  • Crop health monitoring: satellite-based crop health assessed for 1.76 crore parcels every week, with NDVI-based alerts flagging stressed plots before yield is lost.
crop health
  • Pest forewarning and detection: 70+ lakh pest alerts sent to date, powered by 70+ computer vision models trained for pest detection across 3 states. On-device detection returns a result in under 2 seconds, roughly 50% faster than manual inspection, and works offline in the field.
  • Hyper-local weather and digital twin advisory: a weather-linked digital twin of the farm tracks crop stage, health, and pest risk in real time, and issues sowing, irrigation, and harvest advisories tailored to that plot.
  • Precision at scale: satellite-based vision AI has completed detection and classification of 3.77 crore individual coconut and palm trees standing across Andhra Pradesh (2025).

Optimising Inputs, Increasing Outputs

Moving from volume-based to need-based input distribution

India’s fertilizer subsidy regime has historically rewarded volume over precision, and the ecological cost of over-application is well established: soil acidification, nitrate leaching into groundwater and surface water, and elevated nitrous oxide emissions, a greenhouse gas with a far higher warming potential than CO2 over a 100-year horizon.

fieldWISE addresses this at the point of transaction, not just in policy: entitlements are grounded in verified crop and extent data, with doses customized according to location, crop, and extent, and sales cannot exceed what is dispensed against that entitlement. This season, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, 16,24,927 farmers transacted under this system in Kharif 2026-27 through APAIMS, with 73,84,455 total bags distributed (Urea: 58,86,663 bags / 2,64,899 MT; DAP: 14,97,792 bags / 74,889 MT).

The result is measurable, not just theoretical:

  • Urea distributed: 2,78,517 MT this season, down 28.6% versus last year (up to July).
  • DAP distributed: 81,252 MT this season, down 43.3% versus last year (up to July).

Farmers have a transparent view of their allocation, purchases, and nearby suppliers through the app or web, with a breakup of their allotment across prescribed doses to support optimized fertilizer decisions. The system is linked to Aadhaar-based biometric or OTP authentication and to the CMAID application, enabling a transparent, auditable transaction history.

Inputs are optimised on the water side too

The same soil-moisture and stress-detection layer that drives fertilizer dosing also feeds irrigation advisory: farmers get alerts on water stress by plot, not by district average. This is fieldWISE’s approach to Integrated Crop Water Management, applying the Government of India’s “Per Drop More Crop” principle at the level of a single field, so that water, like fertilizer, is applied on the basis of verified need rather than habit.

Natural farming, built into the advisory loop

As part of the El Niño action plan, fieldWISE through APAIMS is embedding natural farming actions and recommendations, tailored to the real-time state of the crop, that field officials can use when advising farmers. A built-in weekly tracking survey enables field officials to track whether farmers have actually incorporated these advisories, closing the loop between recommendation and adoption, and reducing reliance on chemical and externally-sourced inputs.

Increasing Farmer Income

fieldWISE enables farmers to make smarter decisions to improve their overall income, from selecting the right crop and selling at the right time and place, to accessing government schemes and benefits.

crop planning
  •  Crop Planning: shows farmers the cost of cultivation, current market price, estimated yield, and net income for their crop, giving them the numbers needed to make an informed planting and selling decision, rather than farming on habit or guesswork.
  • Scheme access: farmers get better visibility into government scheme eligibility and can track their scheme status directly on the platform. In Andhra Pradesh, farmers can access disbursement details for schemes such as Annadatha Sukhibhava, a farmer welfare and investment support scheme, and the platform integrates with central repositories such as Bharatvistaar to bring central scheme status to farmers directly.
  • Market price discovery: the platform surfaces current and forecast market prices from the mandi closest to the farmer’s location for their specific crop, integrating price portals like Agmarknet and Agriwatch.
  • Seasonal demand signals: this Onam festive season, fieldWISE, via KATHIR, powers a dedicated e-market module that protects farmers from price volatility and gives them direct, fair-price access to buyers, handling end-to-end market operations digitally, across both cash and UPI. So far this cycle, 8,244 farmers have participated, generating 1,93,596 customer transactions worth ₹5.54 Cr in total sales, ₹3.11 Cr through 1,16,750 cash transactions and ₹2.42 Cr through 76,846 UPI transactions.

Beneficiaries and Value Chains Supported

fieldWISE is not a single-user app: it connects an entire rural service economy around the farmer.

  • Farmers: 35 lakh+ registered, with income, productivity, and input-cost benefits described above.
  • Farm machinery and service providers: 10,000+ connected, giving smallholders on-demand access to equipment (the “Uberization” of farm machinery) and giving providers a new digital demand channel to reach farmers who could not otherwise afford or find them.
  • Input dealers and suppliers: made discoverable to nearby farmers for fertilizer and pesticide availability, digitizing what was previously an informal, word-of-mouth channel.
  • Buyers and traders: connected directly to farmer produce through the market linkage and e-market modules, reducing reliance on intermediaries.
  • Consumers: the Onam e-market module explicitly protects both sides of the transaction, giving farmers fair prices while ensuring consumers get quality produce at stable rates during peak festive demand.
  • Government field officers: RSK and extension officers use the same verified data for scheme monitoring, pest surveillance, and fertilizer allotment, with 10,000+ officer logins on APAIMS alone.

Proactive Disaster Preparedness

Cyclone Montha: turning satellite and weather data into lead time. Ahead of Cyclone Montha’s landfall, APAIMS used satellite analytics to digitally map 6.23 lakh acres of farmland lying in the cyclone’s projected path, then delivered 69+ lakh targeted SMS alerts to farmers in local languages, carrying safety protocols and contingency plans. Spatial analytics and real-time weather forecasts supported strategic resource mobilization, enabling officials to pre-position relief materials and assign field officers before landfall.

Aligned with India’s Agricultural Vision

fieldWISE was not built to a single brief: each of its capabilities maps directly onto the Government of India’s own stated priorities for agriculture.

Vision area How fieldWISE delivers
Farmer Income
Crop Planning shows cost of cultivation, market price, and net income before a farmer sows. Scheme disbursement (e.g., Annadatha Sukhibhava) and fair-price market access (the Onam e-market module) put money and market access directly in farmers’ hands.
Productivity
12.1 Cr farm parcels digitized to over 90% accuracy, 1.76 Cr parcels assessed for crop health every week, and pest forewarning with on-device detection under 2 seconds.
Water Security (“Per Drop More Crop”)
Soil-moisture-based stress detection and irrigation advisory are built into the same farm-level loop as fertilizer dosing, so water use is optimized alongside inputs, not managed separately.
Digital Agriculture
Built directly on AgriStack and Digital Crop Survey, connected to the Krishi DSS pest-surveillance ecosystem, and running on sovereign satellite, AI, and GenAI models at state scale.
Climate Resilience
Natural farming advisory tied to the El Niño action plan, and a proactive disaster-response system that mapped farmland and alerted 69+ lakh farmers ahead of Cyclone Montha’s landfall.
Self-Reliance (Aatmanirbhar)
In-house, sovereign AI models and a domestically built platform, reducing dependence on external technology for India’s agricultural data infrastructure.

Conclusion

By grounding every entitlement, advisory, and recommendation in verified field-level data, fieldWISE turns productivity gains, input savings, and farmer income into outcomes of a single connected system, rather than separate policy goals pursued in isolation. The result is a platform that is not just adopted at scale, but actively used, daily, by the farmers it was built for, directly advancing India’s own vision for a more productive, resilient, and self-reliant agricultural sector. From APAIMS in Andhra Pradesh to KATHIR and MahaAgriNEX, fieldWISE stands as the proof point for what state-scale, data-verified agriculture can achieve for a Viksit Bharat.
