Need

The state of Andhra Pradesh in India has more than 10 million acres of cultivable land and has primarily two regions, one with positive water balance and the other severely water stressed. There is a need to optimize the cropping pattern so that the Economic Output is maximized while maintaining Water Balance with sustainable Ground Water. Various sectors such as Agriculture, Horticulture, Aquaculture/Fisheries and Animal husbandry must also be considered.

Approach

The state used Agro-Climaic Zone planning solution from Vassar Labs to come up with optimum cropping pattern. The Agro Climatic Zone Planning takes into consideration all the below factors to recommend a Cropping Pattern for a specific land holding. The solution focuses on:

  • Increasing the Land Utilization
  • Increasing the Crop Intensity
  • Increasing the productivity
  • Efficient use of Land & Water

The solution used all the above data and recommended a cropping pattern as given below. The solution recommended replacing water intensive crops like Paddy, Sugar cane with Irrigated Dry Crops such as Maize, Bajra, Jowar etc. and Horticulture crops.

Benefit

For the State, the recommended cropping pattern by the solution – if implemented would yield the below results.

  • Agricultural area increase from 5.918 million ha to 6.220 million ha (5% increase)
  • Horticulture area increase from 1.489 million ha to 1.895 million ha (27% increase)
  • Agriculture Gross Value Added increase from Rs. 31,5150 millions to Rs. 36,1130 millions (14.5% increase)
  • Horticulture Gross Value Added increase from Rs. 34,2790 millions to 48,1790 millions (40.5% increase)
  • The Gross Value Added increase in Agriculture would be 15%, Horticulture 41% and overall 31%

Crop Soil Moisture Stress Advisories

Need

Agriculture is one the major contributors to GVA for the State of Andhra Pradesh. Out of the total geographical area of 1.6 Lakh Hectares, 80 Lakh Hectares(Net) is cultivable area and 50% of that is under rainfed cultivation. The climate change leading to deficit rainfall & changing rainfall patterns are causing soil moisture stress, which is forcing the farmers under rainfed irrigation to routinely face with yield loss and crop failure. There is a need for an advisory to be raised a week in advance to protect the crops that are under severe stress.

Approach

State of Andhra Pradesh, India has used solution from Vassar Labs to raise agro-advisories by predicting soil moisture stress a week ahead of time and validated by field multi-purpose officers and necessary interventions have been carried out. Crop stress management coupled with interventions saved the crop in the state in 2017-18.


This solution takes into account:

  • Current Rainfall and Weather Parameters
  • Rainfall and Weather Forecast
  • Soil Moisture
  • Crop Booking Data
  • Date of sowing of Crop
  • Crop Phenology, Critical Periods and Crop Water Requirements
  • Soil Data
  • Satellite Data

Considering all the above-mentioned parameters, system raises advisories if the current soil moisture and forecast rainfall along with its probability will fall short of the crop water requirement based on the type of the crop, age of the crop and weather parameters.

Once the advisory is raised, agriculture extension officer validates the advisory with hand held soil moisture sensor and necessary interventions are planned. Field functionaries are equipped with a smart phone application that directs them to the farms that need intervention along with the closest water source. The ground truth data from the field is used as source to Machine Learning algorithms to improve the accuracy of the Soil Moisture models from Satellite data.

Benefit

Soil Moisture advisories were raised in 2017-18 which have been validated by field extension officers and were used to plan right interventions to save the rainfed area crops in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Crop Pest/Disease Advisories

Need

Pest and Disease affect the yield of the crop and any advisory that can alert the farmer and the authorities in advance can help with planning interventions.


Approach

The State of Andhra Pradesh has used a solution from Vassar Labs to raise advisories for pest and diseases for the crops in the state. The solution uses pest models that take into account current weather, forecasted weather, crop phenology, stage of the crop and favourable conditions for pest or disease to thrive and raise advisories to appropriate farmers and Agriculture field officers who planned interventions to protect the crops from the pest or disease attack.

Benefit

Advisories are raised to Agricultural field officers. In addition to raising advisories the System also gives the appropriate remedial actions that need to be taken to mitigate pest risk.

Crop Date of Sowing Advisories

Need

A large state in South India with more than 10 million acres of cultivable land, 3M+ farms wanted a solution to advise farmers with information of when to sow for different crops.

State has undertaken a technology initiative to raise agro-advisories by predicting pest stress, a week ahead of time.


Approach

The Date of Sowing Advisories Solution from Vassar Labs uses Weather Forecast, Crop Phenology, 30 Years of historical weather and crop success rate, Crop specific water requirement at critical stages and related information to determine congenial weeks for sowing a particular crop.

This is specific to a particular crop or area based on weather, crop type, forecast etc. This information is disseminated via SMS/Voice Messages in local languages and English to farmers and the field agricultural officers who work with the farmers.

Scientific approach to advising the most conducive week for sowing a crop based on historical data, Crop Phenology, Weather forecast and other parameters that affect the crop success probability.

Crop Soil Health Card Analysis and Planning

Need

Digital Soil Health Card data has a wealth of information that can be analyzed to provide insights on the use of inputs like Fertilizers, Pesticides and Micro-Nutrients. A large state in South India wanted to analyze all the Digital Soil Health card information across the state to come up with insights that can benefit the Public Policy makers and farmers.

Approach

The customer used Vassar Labs solution to analyze Digital Soil Health card data that uses cropping patterns, soil health card, crop cutting experiment data and fertilizer consumption data to come up with the following

  • The soil nutrient and health status in a geo-spatial format
  • Major Nutrients like N, P, K, Micro Nutrients like Boron, Zinc and Ph are considered
  • The current pattern of fertilizer usage across the state against the Soil Health Card recommendations
  • Financial impact to stakeholders due to excess fertilizer usage
  • Impact on productivity because of low usage or wrong mix
  • Impact on productivity due to problematic soils and cost of correction of problematic soils

Maintain Soil health and quality

Crop Acreage Estimation

Need

A large state in South India wanted to estimate crop acreages using satellite data with little/no manual entry. This can help in better decisions in public policy in recommending cropping pattern, estimating crop yield, policies for better market price for agriculture produce etc.

Approach

The state used solutions from Vassar Labs that use remote sensing data for Crop type monitoring and Crop acreage estimation. Using both optical and microwave remote sensing data the crop acreage estimation for different crops like Paddy, Ground Nut, Maize etc were estimated. This data was verified and improved using field data to better the accuracy of machine learning algorithms.
